The Tutu Project

This blog is about travel and photography....and basically all things to consider:) I felt compelled today to put up a website that is just that, something to consider. Consider looking at (the photography is amazing), consider the places (travel destinations are great), and consider the cause (we all know someone who has been touched by breast cancer). Take a look, and enjoy its a wonderfully fun series of photos and an even more wonderful story!

Be sure to pin some of the photography....lets get this word out!

Wanna see some great wildlife, beautiful views and get in some good exercise? Make stissing hike your day trip. This easy to get to trail is a great bun burner and its all worth it at the top. The directions up top arent exactly great so here is a more detailed direction: Take 9 going north to Rhinebeck, turn right at the first light onto East Market street, take this road all the way into Pine plains (actually considered 199).  When you get to Pine plains take a right at the Stissing house go about a mile and you will hit Lake Road. You might miss it because it says Town Recreational Area, but it is also lake rd. This road will take you right to the trailhead, you will see the fire town above you.

Your start to this hike will include about 20 minutes of straight up. This will bring you directly to the fire town. Climb up, if you dare, and get a great view of the Catskills, as well as area farms and ponds/lakes. As you head back down you will not go down the same way you came up, this trail is a loop, look directly straight ahead as you come off stairs and head down that way. This full hike will take you about an hour and twenty minutes tops.
After you are done with that loop trail you arent finished. Get back in your car, take a left and head back to the thompson pond nature preserve. Park there and begin your next easy hike around the pond. You will follow the leaf trail marker and get some really great views of the pond, its wildlife (birds, frogs, and fish), and some area farms. You will walk through some high grass, over a few bridges that will be even with the water (might get a little wet depending on how much rain we've had), and get the oppurtunity to sit and watch the wildlife from a few look out posts along the way. At the close of this hike, about an hour total, you should have an appetite so head back into Pine plains.

While in the small, cute town of Pine Plains there is a place that used to be called the Mountain Cow Cafe, but is now under new ownership and is called Pine Plains Platter www.pineplainsplatter.com/ (website looks like its currently under construction). When you come back down toward the town turn right and you can't miss it. We had some really great lunch meals off the specials menu, a shrimp po boy and curry chicken salad. We also tried Harney and Sons new cold tea options, be on the look out they were amazing www.harney.com/results.cfm?secondary=1038.

Beautiful view of the trail we walked

Great views of Thompson preserve

Great old flag at top of the fire tower

All in all a really great day, I appreciate such great friends I have to hike with on days like today. Enjoy your own day out, but don't forget your good friends, camera, energy, and appetite!
